Will state something more meaningful at a time when I don't have to go to sleep. Can"t believe I actually finished a piece of art that I wasn't doing alongside fifth graders. Finished before the deadline even...
*Update: Ok. So I knew what I wanted to do for this piece right from the start. I wanted something that was inward-looking and I wanted to pursue the courage category, so this image popped into my head almost immediately. That moment when Kenshin's facing Jin'e, and he realizes what he has to do to save Kaoru. But her life is important to him, so he makes a very difficult choice and elects to sacrifice his sanity and happiness for her. I wanted to catch that moment, so I thought looking at his eyes reflecting in the sword would be a good way to do it.
The hands and arms are modeled on my own, and I'm very pleased with the right hand. The left could be better still, I think. The eyes are modeled on Satou Takeru, the actor who is playing Kenshin in the new live-action film. I really like the way they turned out. I think they show a bit of the softness and worry that Kenshin is feeling, even as he chooses to use deadly force. I also really like the background, and the way Jin'e turned out as only a vague shadow. I do think the light and dark balance could be better. I'm very, very out of practice.
Roughly four hours, Adobe Photoshop CS, Wacom Tablet Referencing self and Satou Takeru
